Since December 2019, R.O.L.E. Foundation has a plastic recycling facility including a plastic shredder and an injection molder. A second plastic shredder arrived beginning of June 2020. With these machines, R.O.L.E. Foundation is ready to develop various strategies in recycling plastic.
The original plan
The Island Tattoo Connection supported R.O.L.E.’s Environmental Center in acquiring solar panels, the shredder and injection moulder. The initial aim was to provide a long-term sustainable solution in Bali by developing value chains for plastic waste. A second aim was to establish sustainable business by upcycling plastic into usable and easy to make products like surfboard fins and coasters.
Plan change
COVID-19 created delay, because right now it’s difficult to find specialized staff. Therefore, we have decided to change the end product into puzzle-shaped plastic pieces can be used as tiles. One piece can be used as a coaster as well. WeDoo Workshop Bali created a new molding for this.
The recycling mechanism can stay the same. Clean HDPE (type 2) or PP (type 5) plastics are shredded by the shredding machine. After that, the shredded plastics are inserted into the injection molder slowly when the tube temperature is high. The plastic paste that comes out from the end of the tube will be molded into the shape of the molding.
What is next?
With the addition of the second plastic shredder, we are thinking about how to use this plastic recycling initiative as a means to engage more people to come to R.O.L.E. Foundation. Hopefully, people can learn that recycling is one of the other ways of managing plastic waste by operating the facilities together.
