On July 12, 2024, we organized the Monthly Beach Cleanup at Kelan Beach with 47 participants who joined the campaign for real action for our ocean. With a duration of 1.5 hours, we managed to collect 352.6 kg of non-organic waste that will be separated and cleaned at our center. We would like to say thank you to Club Ocean for continuing to support this activity every month and spread the greater impact on the environment while also helping to increase community awareness. Furthermore, thank you to Think Ocean for supporting this Beach Cleanup event to do real action for the environment. We hope that this program will continue to educate the community about the problem of marine debris, which has a negative impact on the ecosystem and the environment. Beach Cleanup will continue to campaign for real action waste issues on marine life to raise awareness more broadly.

Location and Condition of the Beach

Kelan Beach is one of the favorite beaches to visit in South Kuta, Bali. People come here to enjoy the sunset moment with family and friends. It is located just beside the International Ngurah Rai Airport. During this rainy season, a lot of waste is easily found along the coastline. It is worsened by some irresponsible visitors that just leave their waste on the beach. Therefore this beach looks so dirty when I did a survey here. Some fishermen told me that some cleaners from the government sometimes do cleanup but not often. Furthermore, if you visit the beach, you will not see many trash bins around while the beach receives a lot of local visitors every day. So we chose this beach to be the venue for conducting beach cleanup this month. We hope people will see us with real action for a better environment and future generations.

Waste Collection and Separation

We collected 352.6 kg of non organic waste during the Beach Cleanup at Kelan Beach. As we can see on the pie chart, we collected two giant vehicle tires that may be washed away by ocean currents and waves that could reach 148 kg and become the biggest percentage of the total collected waste for this month. Residue still has a significant percentage of the total waste which is around 30%. We categorized all broken and dirty non organic waste as residue that will be transferred to landfill. We collected almost 60 kg of glass bottles during this event, this glass bottle will be crushed and recycled at the center. Hard plastic such as plastic glass bottles and plastic cups could touch approximately 5.6% of total waste. Otherwise, soft plastic such as laminated and colored plastic only reaches 1.9% of the collected waste. There are 2.8% shoes/slippers that were collected during the event. Aluminum cans are as always the minority of this percentage.
