On the morning of December 12th, 2025, Sekeh Beach, usually a quiet stretch of sand soon became a place of collaboration and purpose as R.O.L.E. Foundation, sponsored by Club Ocean, led a beach cleanup alongside 61 participants. All participants included students and teachers from SD 2 Benoa, R.O.L.E. Foundation staff, Bali WISE students, and volunteers come together with a shared goal: to care for a beach that often receives waste carried by tides and currents.

Location and Condition of the Beach

Sekeh Beach lies along the same continuous coastline as Jerman Beach, Jimbaran, and Kuta. While nearby beaches such as Kuta and Jimbaran are cleaned frequently due to high tourist activity, Sekeh Beach sits in a quieter section of the coastline. Ocean currents and seasonal winds move debris along this shared shoreline, causing waste from busier areas to drift and settle here. As a result, Sekeh Beach often becomes a natural collection point for marine debris.

Waste Collection and Separation

The cleanup began at 07.00 AM, with participants spreading out along the sand, working together under the rising sun. By 08.30 AM, the impact of their effort was clearly visible. In just 90 minutes, the team collected a total of 876.35 kilograms of inorganic waste, removing a significant amount of pollution before it could be pulled back into the ocean.

A closer look at the collected waste revealed an important pattern. Residue waste (materials that are difficult to recycle and often left behind in the environment) made up 75.8% of the total. This was followed by hard plastics (13%), including plastic cups, bottles, and styrofoam, the everyday items that easily travel across coastlines and pose long-term threats to marine life. Beyond the numbers, the true impact of the cleanup was reflected in the people involved. For the students of SD 2 Benoa, Sekeh Beach became an open-air classroom, offering a hands-on lesson about the importance of coastal pollution awareness.

To ensure the cleanup created lasting impact beyond the shoreline, all collected waste was transferred to the R.O.L.E. Foundation Zero Waste Center for further processing. At the center, the waste will be carefully sorted by type, allowing recyclable and manageable materials to be handled in-house. Several waste categories will be self-managed by the Zero Waste Center, while the remaining materials will be delivered to trusted partner facilities equipped with larger-scale and more appropriate waste management systems. This process ensures that the waste collected is responsibly treated and does not return to the environment.

This collaboration at Sekeh Beach showed how collective action can create meaningful change. Each bag of waste collected represented more than cleaner sand, it represented shared responsibility across generations and communities. Through partnerships like this, Sekeh Beach becomes a reminder that every stretch of coastline matters, and that consistent action is key to protecting Bali’s marine environment for the future.
