CURRENT SITUATION:
ROLE Foundation is a non-profit organization that is committed to educating the Disadvantaged and At Risk Women of Indonesia in sustainable skills, jobs and business practices. All ROLE’s Skills, Job and Business Education for Disadvantaged and At risk Women come under the Bali WISE Program. Currently Bali WISE is teaching a program called ‘Weaving Futures’, which has provensuccessful in attracting our target students, who are local middle aged women. These women were mostly and formally employed in the fishing or farming industries. Jobs which no longer exist.
Weaving Futures teaches how to produce fabric dyes from organically grown plants and how to spin thread from organic cotton. Then in turn how to use the dyed thread by weaving them into fabric. The women learn the many variations of dying fabrics to make patterns and display color and are taught two types of hand looms.
OBJECTIVES:
Bali WISE is looking to attract and offer a course to the younger disadvantaged and at risk women, who mostly look at dying and weaving as not a modern job or a part of theold business world. Also the products that are produced by the students, which will initially be only soft bags, will be sold and used for funding in ROLE Foundation’s effort to become financially sustainable itself. The funds will also further develop the course and help us to reach out to the greater community.
The garment manufacturing skills of design, pattern making and the use of high speed machines will be all part of this course along with: costing, marketing, sales and business management.
Students will learn that ethnic and natural organic clothing and accessories are a modern fashion trend in today’s world and there are plenty of future business opportunities that await them if they learn the proper skills.
Along with ROLE’s more traditional Weaving Educational Course, the Fashion Business Course will present women another, and perhaps, a trendier alternative for learning job and personal skills that are essential for breaking out of poverty.
WHAT IS NEEDED TO REALIZE THE PROGRAM?
CONSTRUCTION
ROLE is asking for funds to begin construction of a new building where production for the course will occur. Currently we have a building where we can start the course and production, but it is not ideal for higher capacity. Also we will reconstruct the dorm to add toilets and showers1 to make it more comfortable for accommodating women students. ROLE also needs to reconstruct a building where a few looms are housed.
EQUIPMENT, SUPPLIES, AND MATERIALS
We require a set of high speed sewing machines including over-locker, twin needle and button hole; design and pattern-making equipment and materials, cutting table, fabric, beads, scissors, etc. We also will need two computers an office desk,a projector, screen, and office supplies. One computer will be used for marketing and the other for administration.
STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS
The program will require one teacher who is experienced in teaching all aspects of garment making (pattern making, design, and sewing). Plus an expat volunteer team that is currently designing and producing fashion in Bali
PROJECTED TIME FRAME:
We project to open the course and start production April 1st, 2014. The following tasks need to be completed before that date:
- Temporary Building – will be ready in one week/10days (by January 30, 2014) and all our weaving machines will be moved to the one area. This will leave the existing building for the planned sewing machines and cutting table.
- Research into sewing machine set needed to make soft bags. Cutting table, other equipment and tools, etc. 3rd Feb – 8th Feb
- Curriculum 3rd – 8th Feb (research and development)
- Teacher – Full time Staff, Part time and Volunteers from Fashion Industry – February
- Teach up student teachers – Feb/March
- Course and Production Starts – 1st April
