The ZeroWaste Center by the R.O.L.E. Foundation continues to expand, and this year it has introduced a new facility called the Bee Cultivation Station, dedicated to providing education on one particular species of bee, the Trigona bee, commonly known as the Kele-kele bee. This program is fully supported by the Australian Consulate-General and aims to create ongoing positive impacts on the environment. The station was established to raise awareness about a small species with a remarkably significant role in the ecosystem.

Trigona bees (Kele-kele) possess many unique characteristics and are very safe to cultivate at home, as they are non-stinging. In addition, they produce honey with a distinctive flavor that offers considerable health benefits. For this reason, the station was developed to introduce this important species, which is often seen in gardens yet remains unfamiliar to many in terms of its identity and methods of cultivation.

In its initial phase, the station features five bee colonies that visitors can observe and study. Guests are able to see up close the anatomy of Trigona bees and the uniquely structured yet sturdy nests that protect them from predators such as ants and geckos. During guided tours, visitors will also have the opportunity to directly view sections of the hive where honey and bee pollen are harvested. To ensure safety, visitors will be required to wear protective clothing, as although Trigona bees do not sting, they may swarm and attempt to enter the ears during the harvesting process. At this stage, we prioritize both the security and comfort of our guests to prevent any undesirable incidents.

The station is also equipped with a range of informational boards to enhance learning effectiveness. Additionally, a specially crafted Trigona bee statue made from recycled tires has been installed, enabling visitors to observe the bee’s anatomy in greater detail. Beyond the displays, interactive educational methods are provided, including engaging games designed to help visitors better understand the material learned about Trigona bees in an enjoyable way.

The ZeroWaste Center by the R.O.L.E. Foundation remains committed to preserving the environment, educating communities on waste management, and increasing public awareness of environmental stewardship. Through this station, we hope to present visitors with new and valuable knowledge. Moreover, the station serves as a reminder that only humans possess the power to either preserve or destroy nature—ultimately, the choice lies in whether we help safeguard the environment or allow it to deteriorate further.
