On July 18, 2025, a collaborative effort was made to clean up Kelan Beach as part of a large-scale beach cleanup initiative. This initiative was spearheaded in collaboration with Yayasan Anak Kasih Karunia, and it saw the active involvement of around 11 children. These children played a crucial role in the restoration efforts aimed at rejuvenating the coastal environment. Students from Bali WISE, as well as volunteers and staff from the R.O.L.E. Foundation, also participated in the initiative. Over a brief period, participants successfully collected a total of 215.2 kilograms of non-organic waste, which was subsequently delivered to the ZeroWaste Center for appropriate sorting and disposal. We extend our sincere appreciation to Club Ocean and Umisakura Japan for their invaluable support of this program and their continued contribution to meaningful environmental protection efforts, particularly in addressing the issue of marine waste. The initiative’s goals included not only waste removal but also raising public awareness about marine pollution and encouraging the broader community to engage in efforts to protect and preserve our oceans.

Location and Condition of the Beach

Kelan Beach, in South Kuta, Bali, is a popular destination in the region. Many visitors come to enjoy the scenic sunsets with their family and friends. The beach is visually appealing and conveniently located near Ngurah Rai International Airport. However, the increase in visitors has also led to an accumulation of trash due to visitors’ careless actions of not cleaning up after themselves. A recent survey I conducted revealed that the beach is visibly polluted. According to local fishermen, government-appointed cleaning crews occasionally conduct cleanups, though these efforts are infrequent. Furthermore, there is a clear shortage of waste disposal facilities despite the consistently high number of daily local visitors. In light of these issues, Kelan Beach has been selected as the site for this month’s beach cleanup initiative. The aim of this activity is the leading by example and the encouragement of broader community engagement in the fostering of a cleaner environment and the ensuring of a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Waste Collection and Separation

During our recent Beach Cleanup event at Kelan Beach, we successfully collected a total of 215.2 kilograms of non-organic waste. Over half of this waste was residue—waste that was damaged, broken, or otherwise unsuitable for recycling. Hard plastics, including bottles, cups, cutlery, and Styrofoam, accounted for more than 30% of the total waste collected. This month’s cleanup also yielded over 44 kilograms of glass bottles, which will be cleaned and sorted before being recycled at the Zero Waste Center. Some of these bottles will be sent to larger waste management facilities or partner organizations for recycling. Additionally, used footwear, including shoes and slippers, accounted for 2% of the total waste gathered. The cleanup revealed about 19 different types of waste, emphasizing the persistent problem of marine pollution in the Kelan Beach area.
