On January 24th, 2025, Sawangan’s ZeroWaste Bazaar came to life under unpredictable skies—a mix of light rain and sunshine that only added to the day’s charm. Held after a dedicated beach cleanup, the event symbolized the community’s determination to tackle waste issues head-on, despite the challenges of the weather.

By 1:15 PM, local residents of all ages—grandparents, parents, and children—had already begun to gather at the ZeroWaste Center. The organizers patiently waited until most attendees had arrived before beginning the briefing at 3:40 PM. The atmosphere was vibrant, buzzing with conversations and anticipation for the event ahead.

The educators from R.O.L.E. Foundation delivered an engaging presentation, highlighting Bali’s pressing waste problems, particularly along its shores. Their message was clear and inspiring: through proper waste separation at home, the community could reduce the amount of trash that ends up polluting the ocean. This reminder encouraged attendees to continue and even strengthen their independent waste separation efforts.

The flow of the bazaar was seamless, as most participants were already familiar with the process. They registered, browsed through the stalls, shopped for their needs, and checked out at the cashier. The snack station, a crowd favorite, was the first to sell out, showcasing the enthusiasm for locally made treats.
Another popular spot was the apparel station, where attendees eagerly sifted through clothing, with some heading there as their first stop to secure their favorite items. The Rice, Coffee, and Sugar Station, as always, served its purpose with efficiency, while families stopped by to explore other stations that supported sustainable living.

The bazaar was more than just a marketplace—it was a quarterly gathering that fostered connections within the local community. It became a space where people of all ages could meet, chat, and share a common goal of creating a more sustainable future.

As the event wrapped up, participants departed with purchases in hand and a renewed commitment to reducing waste. ZeroWaste center team hopes to see even more involvement in future bazaars, with more waste separated at its source and fewer items destined for the ocean.
The ZeroWaste Bazaar remains a shining example of how sustainability and community spirit can come together, creating not just an event, but a movement toward meaningful change.
