On Friday, August 9, 2024, the ZeroWaste Speech Contest was held with 32 participants from Bali WISE students Intake 58. Through this event, we aim to raise environmental awareness among today’s youth. The speech competition encourages participants to research, understand, and analyze an environmental issue so that they can effectively present and explain it to the audience. This mechanism helps develop environmental knowledge in each participant. Each participant will present various topics related to environmental issues. The event clearly has a significant impact on enriching participants’ understanding of environmental matters. Additionally, their public speaking skills will be honed, which will be useful in their future careers. Our greatest hope is that the increasingly concerning environmental issues will continue to be highlighted to raise awareness and encourage more people to take real action for the environment.
The participants were required to present their speeches on environmental topics of their choice to judges and an audience, with each speech lasting between three to four minutes. Some spoke about waste management and strategies for handling waste in daily life, while others tackled larger issues such as climate change, water pollution, air contamination, and forest fires. It was impressive to see them integrate their personal experiences into their speeches. We were notably impressed by their improvement in confidence and knowledge as they spoke. It was clear that they invested considerable effort in preparing for the contest and practiced diligently to perform their best on stage. We believe this event significantly impacted their confidence and enhanced their communication and public speaking skills.
We had professional judges who evaluated and offered advice on students’ speeches. The assessment covered categories such as content quality, environmental messaging, English proficiency, time management, and confidence. In summary, the ZeroWaste Speech Contest for BW students from Intake 58 was a success. The event received positive feedback from both the audience and participants. We believe this event can continue in the next intake, once again providing students with opportunities to enhance their environmental knowledge and communication skills simultaneously.
