On 14 November 2025, a collaborative beach cleanup was conducted at Kelan Beach as part of a large-scale coastal restoration initiative. Organized in partnership with SD 11 Jimbaran, the activity involved 20 students who played an important role in efforts to rehabilitate the coastal environment. Students from Bali WISE, along with volunteers and staff from the R.O.L.E. Foundation, also participated in the program. Within a short duration, participants collected a total of 302.75 kilograms of non-organic waste, which was subsequently transported to the ZeroWaste Center for proper sorting and disposal. We extend our sincere appreciation to Club Ocean for their invaluable support in enabling this initiative and for their ongoing commitment to environmental protection, particularly in addressing marine pollution. This initiative aimed not only to remove waste but also to raise public awareness about the impacts of marine debris and to encourage broader community participation in efforts to protect and preserve our oceans.
Location and Condition of the Beach

Kelan Beach, located in South Kuta, Bali, is a popular destination known for its scenic sunsets and its appeal to families and groups of visitors. Its visual charm and proximity to Ngurah Rai International Airport make it easily accessible and frequently visited. However, the growing number of visitors has contributed to increasing waste accumulation, largely due to careless disposal habits and a lack of proper cleanup by beachgoers. A recent survey we conducted indicated that the beach is noticeably polluted. Local fishermen also reported that government-appointed cleaning crews occasionally carry out cleanups, though these efforts occur infrequently. In addition, there is a clear shortage of waste disposal facilities, despite the consistently high volume of local visitors each day. Given these concerns, Kelan Beach has been selected as this month’s beach cleanup location. This initiative aims to lead by example and encourage broader community participation in fostering a cleaner environment, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable future for generations to come.
Waste Collection and Separation

During the recent beach cleanup at Kelan Beach, a total of 302.75 kilograms of non-organic waste was collected. More than half of this amount consisted of residue—waste that was damaged, broken, or otherwise unsuitable for recycling. Hard plastics, including bottles, cups, cutlery, and styrofoam, represented over 30% of the total collection. This month’s cleanup also produced more than 45 kilograms of glass bottles, which will be cleaned and sorted before being recycled at the Zero Waste Center. A portion of these bottles will be forwarded to larger waste management facilities or partner organizations for further processing. Additionally, used footwear, such as shoes and slippers, accounted for approximately 6% of the total waste collected. The variety of waste types found during the cleanup highlights the ongoing issue of marine pollution in the Kelan Beach area.
