Selamat Datang dan Selamat Tahun Baru!

The new year is still very young and many things have already happened at the ISC. We restarted the interactive children’s program after the Christmas break, had volunteers and surfers coming together for a big beach clean up in Keramas and the Canggu-Brawa area, received DAP funding to kick off a Women’s Weaving Cooperative and have set up a Youtube Channel where we’re going to upload videos related to our work and about our programs. We are also pleased to announce that Valentine’s Day on the 14th of February will be a special day for us. It will be the day when our current Environmental Ambassador students are going to have their graduation ceremony and Rotary Club Bali, Nusa Dua will officially hand over the truck and the shredder that they had generously donated for the Waste to Wonder program in Sawangan. It will also be the day when representatives from the banjar of Ngis in Karangasem will come to the ISC to sign the MOU with ROLE Foundation about ROLEs assistance in setting up the Waste to Wonder Program in Ngis.
We are happy about all those positive events happening and hope a lot more will come as the year grows older. If you would like to be updated more often Friend us on Facebook. And if you think we’re doing a great job and you would like to contribute to it, make a donation.
But so far, we hope you enjoy reading our stories about what has happened the last weeks!

All the best, Termina Kasih,
The Team from ROLE Foundation

Eco Ambassadors and Teach the Teachers Program

Our Eco Ambassador students Komang and Nengah are about to finish the program in a few weeks time. They will set up a Waste to Wonder project – similar to the one at the Island Sustainability Center in their Banjar Ngis in Karangasem. Our new student Wayan – also from Karangasem – has arrived and has already started his first week of training.

In the last weeks the students were learning how to build home and community gardens, how to build soil from raw matter such as leaves, cupboards, straw, manure etc.
Furthermore they were introduced to the Mesoamerican technique of building Mini Chinampas in the permaculture area. These fenced areas help regulating the water supply of the beds. This activity put the theoretical lessons about water issues such as water catchments and the importance of water for life into practice.

WORKSHOPS

Permaculture, Cooking, Natural Dyes, Natural Medicine Classes
This month’s permaculture workshops included the practice of making organic liquid fertilizer, how to build soil, how to make home and community gardens and how to make Mini-Chinampas which are fenced areas to help regulating the water supply of the beds.

Visitors and students interested in Cooking rather than gardening could also earn how to cook Papaya and Snail Curry, Snail Fritter, Durian – Banana Compott and other delicious Balinese dishes.

The workshops are open to everyone who is interested.
Cooking Classes: Tuesdays and Saturdays 9am -12pm
Natural Dyes Classes: Wednesdays 10am – 3pm

WHAT THE VOLUNTEERS SAY:

Danny de Klerk (22 years old), South Africa – January 2013
I really didn’t know what to expect coming to work for the Role Foundation having never worked on a farm, knowing nothing about permaculture and not understanding a single word of Indonesian. But within the first half hour of being here I felt completely at home and relaxed.
My first job working here was under the guidance of Pak Ketut who has been working at the park since it was opened. He has been so great at helping and teaching me and making me feel at home during my time here.
Since my first job with Pak Ketut, I have had equally amazing experiences with the rest of the staff, they are all so friendly and welcoming and always willing to help.
The park itself is a beautiful place to work and stay. We are constantly working on the park, building, planting, repairing and organizing – there is always a job to do, and it is so great to see a project come together and to see the park develop. I have really enjoyed my time here and hope that I can return at some point in the future.
