On Friday, 28th of May 2021, R.O.L.E. Foundation organized this month’s beach clean up at Jerman Beach. The team with 23 participants collected 33.17 kg of non-organic waste.
The condition of the beach
Interestingly enough, the condition of the beach was better than when the ZeroWaste team checked it a few days before. A big contributor of the waste on Jerman beach are the many warungs (small restaurants) and food sellers. There was a lot of food packaging waste lying around.
However, the most waste that we found were microplastics. Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long which can be harmful to our ocean and aquatic life.
Waste collection and separation
In 1.5 hours, the participants collected 33.17 kg of non-organic waste. After the cleanup, the Environmental Educators supervised the Bali WISE students to separate the waste at the ZeroWaste Center. The biggest share of the waste consisted of slippers and rubber (29.8%), followed by residue (19.1%) consisting of tiny dirty pieces, and hard plastic (13.9%).
Why was such a small amount of waste collected?
The R.O.L.E. Foundation team cleaned the beach after the Super Flower Blood Moon. These lunar circumstances caused a high tide and the waves brought a lot of waste back into the sea. Besides that, most waste on Jerman beach was microplastic, which takes more time to clean up.
Doing beach cleanups helps to spread awareness on how important it is to handle waste responsibly and keep our environment clean. Thank you B1G1 for supporting this beach cleanup.
