The ZeroWaste Center is developing a new station called Flower Station, which started in January 2023. The main goal of establishing this station is to breed more types of flowers which will later decorate the ZeroWaste Center area with colorful and fragrant flowers. In addition, the Flower Station is also the first step towards realizing the development of beehive cultivation in this center, which requires a flower garden as a food provider for the bees. This Flower Station can educate and inspire the local community to use the land around the house to plant flowers to beautify the house and preserve nature.
In the first month, we focused on designing and planning the Flower Station’s construction and conducting some research on suitable plants to grow in the ZeroWaste Center, which has high temperatures and is geologically a limestone land that is difficult to collect rainwater. The conditions offer many constraints and limitations in developing many types of flower plants. That month, we started determining the nursery’s location and purchasing the items needed in the flower nursery process. We also started to do nurseries from seeds of several types of flowers, but the first attempt failed because there was an error. But we learned and did other methods, and as a result, we managed to do a good flower nursery. (See Figure 2)
In the second month, we moved some of the seedlings to more extensive potting media so that they grow well. We watered it twice a day and made sure that the sunlight also provided energy for the flowers to grow bigger. At this stage, we were facing the problem of slugs that eat the young flowers. Of course we studied this and found a solution so that the remaining flowers were placed higher on the table so that the snails could not reach them anymore.(See Figure 3)
In the third month, the hot dry season begined and this really affected the flowers at the Flower Station which has a transparent tin roof that cannot reduce the heat from the sun which immediately makes the plants wilt. We tricked this by watering the plants more diligently in the morning and late afternoon so that the plants get good water intake. However, the next plan is to replace the transparent roof with a paranet which can minimize heat and rainfall. Overall, the construction of the Flower Station has only reached 40% because we still have to develop more types of flowers and spread them to various corners of the center.
