On 24 May 2025, the R.O.L.E. Foundation had the distinct honour of partnering with Leoni Gelato in a significant beach cleanup initiative at Kedonganan Beach. Leoni Gelato assumed a leading role in this endeavour, exemplifying a strong commitment to addressing Bali’s waste management issues and serving as a model of environmental responsibility. The event also featured collaboration with SD 3 Benoa, which contributed 40 students and 6 teachers to the activity. Leoni Gelato was represented by over 50 team members, while the R.O.L.E. Foundation was represented by 10 participants. Collectively, the group succeeded in collecting an impressive 272 kilograms of waste within the span of one hour. Subsequent to the cleanup, the collected waste was transported to the ZeroWaste Center for sorting. Participating students took an active role in the waste separation process, affording them a valuable, hands-on educational experience in sustainable waste management.

Location and Condition of the Beach

Kedonganan Beach, situated near Jimbaran, is renowned for its bustling fish market and scenic shoreline. The beach draws both local residents and international visitors, offering a distinctive cultural ambiance characterized by vibrant seafood vendors and traditional fishing boats. However, its popularity has also led to increased waste accumulation, with plastic waste, food packaging, and other non-biodegradable materials frequently found along the coast. Tackling this issue is vital to preserving the natural beauty and ecological integrity of the area, thereby supporting the well-being of marine ecosystems and the surrounding communities.

Waste Collection and Separation

During the cleanup, a total of 272 kilograms of non-organic waste was collected within approximately one hour. The majority of the waste—over 60%—consisted of residue, which refers to severely damaged or heavily contaminated materials that cannot be processed at our facility. This type of waste will be transported to a landfill for appropriate disposal and management. A significant portion of the collected waste comprised glass bottles, amounting to nearly 40 kilograms. These will be processed at our center, with some sent to a waste bank to facilitate more effective recycling. Additionally, hard plastics—including plastic bottles, cups, and styrofoam—accounted for approximately 7% of the total waste. These materials will largely be handled by the waste bank for further recycling. Soft plastics, along with items such as shoes and sandals, represented a smaller fraction of the waste collected during the initiative.
