On 3 June 2025, the R.O.L.E. Foundation had the privilege of collaborating with Universitas Pelita Bangsa (UPB) in a notable beach cleanup initiative held at Kedonganan Beach. UPB played a leading role in this effort, demonstrating a strong dedication to tackling waste management challenges in Bali and setting an example of environmental stewardship. The event also included participation from SD 6 Benoa, which contributed 20 students and 3 teachers. More than 10 representatives from UPB and 10 participants from the R.O.L.E. Foundation took part in the activity. In total, the team successfully collected 129.91 kilograms of waste within just one hour. Following the cleanup, the waste was transported to the ZeroWaste Center for proper sorting. The participating students actively engaged in the separation process, providing them with a valuable, hands-on learning experience in sustainable waste management.

Location and Condition of the Beach

Kedonganan Beach, located in close proximity to Jimbaran, is well known for its lively fish market and picturesque coastline. Attracting both local residents and international tourists, the beach offers a unique cultural atmosphere marked by vibrant seafood stalls and traditional fishing vessels. However, its growing popularity has contributed to a significant increase in waste accumulation, with plastic debris, food wrappers, and other non-biodegradable materials commonly observed along the shore. Addressing this issue is essential to safeguarding the area’s natural beauty and ecological balance, thereby promoting the health of marine ecosystems and the well-being of nearby communities.

Waste Collection and Separation

During the cleanup activity, approximately 129.91 kilograms of non-organic waste was collected in the span of one hour. A significant portion—exceeding 60%—was classified as residue, comprising materials that were either severely damaged or heavily contaminated, rendering them unsuitable for processing at our facility. As such, these items will be directed to a landfill for proper disposal and management. Hard plastics, including plastic bottles, cups, and styrofoam, constituted around 20% of the total waste and will primarily be managed through the waste bank for further recycling. Notably, glass bottles made up nearly 8 kilograms of the waste collected. These will be processed at our center, with a portion also delivered to the waste bank to support enhanced recycling efforts. Soft plastics, as well as miscellaneous items such as shoes and sandals, represented a smaller percentage of the total waste gathered during the initiative.
