On May 23, 2025, a large-scale beach cleanup was held at Kelan Beach in collaboration with SD 3 Tuban, involving approximately 15 students who actively participated in efforts to restore the coastal environment. Students from Bali WISE, along with volunteers and staff from the R.O.L.E. Foundation, also took part in the initiative. Over a brief period, participants successfully collected a total of 232.25 kilograms of non-organic waste, which was subsequently delivered to the ZeroWaste Center for appropriate sorting and disposal. We extend our sincere appreciation to Club Ocean for their invaluable support of this program and their continued contribution to meaningful environmental protection efforts, particularly in addressing the issue of marine waste. Despite intermittent rainfall during the event, participants displayed exceptional enthusiasm and dedication to removing non-organic debris from the shoreline. Their commitment to fostering a cleaner marine environment was highly commendable. In addition to waste removal, the initiative also aimed to raise public awareness about marine pollution and to encourage the broader community to engage in similar efforts to protect and preserve our oceans.

Location and Condition of the Beach

Kelan Beach, located in South Kuta, Bali, is among the region’s most popular destinations, drawing numerous visitors who gather with family and friends to enjoy its scenic sunsets. Situated conveniently near Ngurah Rai International Airport, the beach offers a visually appealing coastal experience. However, during the rainy season, waste accumulation becomes a serious concern, further intensified by the actions of careless visitors who leave litter behind. A recent survey I conducted revealed that the beach was visibly polluted. According to local fishermen, government-appointed cleaning crews do conduct occasional cleanups, though these efforts are infrequent. Furthermore, there is a clear shortage of waste disposal facilities, despite the consistently high number of daily local visitors. In light of these issues, Kelan Beach has been selected as the site for this month’s beach cleanup initiative. Through this activity, we aim to lead by example and encourage broader community engagement in fostering a cleaner environment and ensuring a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Waste Collection and Separation

During our recent Beach Cleanup event at Kelan Beach, a total of 232.25 kilograms of non-organic waste was successfully collected. Over half of this comprised residue—waste that is damaged, broken, or otherwise unsuitable for recycling. Hard plastics, such as bottles, cups, cutlery, and cosmetic containers, made up more than 10% of the total waste collected. Notably, this month’s cleanup also yielded over 45 kilograms of glass bottles, which will be cleaned and sorted before undergoing recycling processes at the ZeroWaste Center. A portion of these bottles will also be forwarded to larger waste management facilities or partner organizations for further recycling. Additionally, used footwear—including shoes and slippers—accounted for 6% of the total waste gathered. In total, approximately 18 distinct types of waste were identified during the cleanup, highlighting the ongoing issue of marine pollution affecting the Kelan Beach area.
