On September 13, 2024, a Beach Cleanup event was held at Kedonganan Beach, with 65 participants joining this waste management initiative. This month, we are sponsored by Leoni Gelato. They also brought 20 dedicated volunteers to the event, and their gelato added a sweet touch to the day. We’re grateful for their support and contribution to our environmental efforts. In a short period, we successfully collected 381.7 kg of non-organic waste, which will then be sorted at the ZeroWaste Center.

We also extend our gratitude to Club Ocean and Think Ocean CIC for their ongoing support of this program, which aims to raise awareness about the dangers of marine pollution. We hope that this program will continue and that an increasing amount of waste will be removed from the beaches of Bali. Ultimately, we sincerely hope that this tangible movement will further enhance environmental awareness, particularly regarding the oceans.

Location and Condition of the Beach

Kedonganan Beach is a prominent destination for both local and international tourists due to its remarkable natural beauty. This beach is in close proximity to a fishing village and a bustling fish market frequently visited by local residents purchasing fresh seafood. The combined impact of tourism and economic activities significantly affects the cleanliness of the beach, which often appears littered with debris. The waste originates not only from the land but also from the sea, where debris may drift from other areas and eventually wash up on this beach. Therefore, we have selected this beach as the location for our Beach Cleanup event to demonstrate our environmental commitment and to raise public awareness about the dangers of marine pollution.

Waste Collection and Separation

We collected 381.7 kg of non-organic waste at Kedonganan Beach. More than 40% of this was residue, defined as damaged, fragmented, and difficult-to-recycle waste. This month, we gathered over 100 kg of glass bottles, which will be cleaned and sorted before being processed for recycling at the ZeroWaste Center. Some of these bottles will also be sent to larger waste management organizations or companies for recycling. Ghost nets consistently form part of the collected waste, accounting for 7.3% of the total. Additionally, we retrieved 16.4 kg of damaged vehicle tires. There was also 6.5% of the waste categorized as shoes or slippers collected during the Beach Cleanup event at Kedonganan Beach. In total, we collected approximately 24 different types of waste during this event.
