Zero Waste to Ocean park Guests students from Dubai
On Sunday November 20th, we were fortunate to have our first tour of the new EcoPark. While construction is not finalized we still had many activities for the group to do. The international students from GEMS World Academy Dubai arrived at the park at 4pm after enjoying a delicious lunch prepared by our staff. When they arrived they were taken to a shaded area to sit while Audi, our local marine environmentalist, gave them an introduction to the activities of the day and environmental problems in Bali. With assistance from Mike the group was introduced to the idea of ‘Think Global, Act Local’ where it was explained that through addressing environmental problems it would lessen the global affects.
From there the group of 24 students and four teachers were split into three groups for the interactive workshops. The three workshops were composting, seedling planting, and garden bed planting. This was the first time many of the students had worked directly with the natural environment and it was an exciting experience for them.
Students had a chance to throw seed balls.
At the garden planting station students took potted plants and put them in the ground to flourish. At the composting station students stacked green matter, brown matter, and some even carried buckets of cow manure to the composting bins. This compost will decay over the next few months (especially with the rainy season coming to Bali) to create a fertile base for our plants to grow. The final station was for students to plant seeds from our seed bank. The students had a variety of seeds to choose from. There were fruits, trees, spices, flowers, and more. They then had a chance to throw seed balls and learn about them as a method of reforestation.

After an hour and a half of fun environmental activities, Mike gave a debrief on the importance of thinking global and acting locally. The groups discussed what they learned and how they can go back to Dubai and attempt to address some problems in a local way. They were shown the precarious position of Bali’s beautiful natural environment and they had a fun, educational day learning about how to help keep our planet clean.
