On Thursday, 13 February 2020, 19 students of SMPN 3 Kuta Selatan between the ages of 12-14 years old had a half-day training of “Waste to Wonder” at our Zero Waste to Oceans – Community Environment and Skills Center. This made us trained 8397 public school students in total.

They enjoyed recycling paper because they found out that it is very easy to do! Besides that, recycling paper is also fun to do together with friends. But they also learned that the smallest thing we can do in facing waste problems is doing 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle). We should focus first on reducing our waste, even though it can be reused or recycled.

The students also amazed in how so many types of plants around us can be used as natural colors for textiles. Knowing that last year Badung River got red because of the liquid waste used by a textile factory, they learned that we can use natural colors as a wise alternative regarding textiles. They also asked a lot of questions to one of our weavers about weaving techniques and patterns.

In the end, they enjoyed lemongrass tea, traditional cakes, and jamu kunyit asam. They also took their recycled papers with them and they could not wait to show them to their friends at school! After learning for about 2,5 hours, they went back to school with our bus with smiles and laughs. Hopefully, they can be agents of change, even from the smallest scale of the community.

This program could happen with support from Cuca Bali Restaurant. Thank you for supporting this busload of children!
